Although alternative medicines and treatments such as chiropractic care are continuously gaining popularity, there are still a large number of individuals who are apprehensive to resort to these options. Chiropractic care, in particular, has its share of misconceptions and myths that prevent people from considering this treatment in addressing back pains.

Concerns on pain, safety, efficiency and cost have been raised and are still being addressed by the practitioners in this field.  Let us look at each concern and the realistic scenario:

1. "Chiropractic is painful" In general, chiropractic care is painless. The severity of the pain for this 30 to 60 minutes session is actually dependent on the patient's pain threshold. Fact is, this treatment has no downtime and may be performed without the need to stay in the training facilities overnight equates to patients experiencing but minimal pain only.  Some patients even say that the procedure can be likened to just having a body massage.  The pain is highly manageable that the procedure is also recommended to pregnant women, children and even infants.
   
   
2. "Chiropractic is Dangerous" This non-surgical treatment is actually considered as one of the safest alternative in addressing back pains and neck strain.  Although there are concerns on the possibility of developing sever complications, to this date this effect is still classified as rare.  Further, there were cases when chiropractic care had been made an initial option before prescribing strong drugs such as steroids and antidepressants.
   
   
3. "Chiropractors are less competent versus medical doctors" Chiropractors undergo extensive training and education. The education required of a chiropractor is similar to that of medical doctors where a maximum of 4 years is spent on undergraduate education and another 4 to 5 years spent on academic studies.  All chiropractors are required to pass the state and National Board Examination before they are certified.
4. "Chiropractic is pricey" This is a very cheap alternative to surgery and other medical therapy.  As this is an outpatient procedure that does not require the use of surgical hospital equipment, the cost of chiropractic care is considered cost effective.
